CF14 - Burgos - Hornillos del Camino - 18,3 km

Itinerary

You will leave the city via a road parallel to the Education building. On the intersections at Mercado de Granados, you will turn right on a path. Soon, you will arrive at a crossroads, where the river course demarcates two paths. Continuing on the same path, you will be heading to Villalbilla.

Villalbilla is a small village 5 km away from the city of Burgos. Its church is dedicated to “Nuestra Señora de la Asunción”, something quite common along the way. Leaving this village, you will look for the bank of the river Arlanzón, next to the new road.

You can take the other path turning right on the intersection, on “Molino Ramón”. This itinerary doesn’t pass by Villalbilla, since it ends on the first pillar of the viaduct of “Camino de Santiago” highway. Anyway, this area is being altered by the construction of this highway, so it is better you keep following the yellow arrows.

Once you have passed “Puente del Arzobispo” over the river Ubierna, and going on its left side, the Way will lead you to Tardajos. This bridge was the protagonist of the legend that tells the serious horse fall of King Alfonso VI, when he was chasing after his enemies.

Almost 4 km ahead, you will have arrived to Tardajos, where you will find a really interesting fort. Tardajos also has a temple, located in the village centre.

Leaving Tardajos, you will cross river Urbel and 2 km after, you will arrive at Rabé de las Calzadas. This is a village of medieval construction. You will keep going on Calle de D. Baldomero Pampliega and will leave Rabé, passing by the cemetery and the chapel dedicated to “Nuestra Señora del Monasterio”.

The Way that leads the pilgrim towards Hornillos del Camino is only suitable for pilgrims on foot and for experienced cyclists, who shouldn’t have problems with this stretch. Only the so called “Cuesta Matamulos” could be a difficult stretch in this route.

From Rabé de las Calzadas you will walk 8 km to get to Hornillos del Camino. This is another typical village which used to have a pilgrims’ hospital.

The church is the most significant building in the town, and it used to keep the statue of the Virgin of Rocamadour. Near this temple, you will find the pilgrims’ hostel.
