CF15 - Hornillos del Camino - Castrojeriz - 20,40 km
Itinerary
4 km ahead, you will get to the next point on the Way. Once you have left Hornillos, the typical wine cellars and some ruins will be the last constructions you see in this area. The Way goes through a poplar grove and follows a path, going up with no difficulties. Once you get to the top, you will start descending towards San Bol Valley.
After this, you will have a hard ascent to then cross the road that goes from Iglesias to Olmillos de Sasamón.
There are 5 km from San Bol to Hontanas. The name “Hontanas” comes from “Fontana” (fountain). Now, you will have to descend to find its church, dedicated to Immaculate Conception, and from the 14th Century. Next to it, you will see a fountain.
Hontanas is a very well preserved village. Among its most important buildings, you have “Hospital de los Franceses”, which used to be a pilgrims’ hospital and now it is being recovered for the same use.
Leaving the village, you will take a path that goes parallel to the road leading to Castrojeriz. After passing by Garbanzuelo stream, you will find the ruins of San Antón Convent.
The next stop is Castrojeriz, which preserves its medieval castle, as Burgos does too. After passing by a “cruceiro”, you will keep going close to Nuestra Señora del Manzano collegiate church. You will also see Santo Domingo Church and San Juan Church, as well as the ruins of San Francisco Convent and Santa Clara Convent.
