CF16 - Castrojeriz - Frómista - 24,90 km

Itinerary

You will leave Castrojeriz by the west side of the town, where once was San Miguel Gate, and will descend towards river Odra meadow. Then, you will keep walking on a footpath, crossing a walkway over the river and the old medieval bridge. The ascent to Alto de Mostelares is the only hard stretch in this stage, so it is always better to take it easy. From the top, the views are astonishing. Less than 1 km after, you will initiate a sudden descent to the wide meadow of river Pisuerga. A board shows you are entering the area of Itero del Castillo, and soon after his, you will get to a rest area.  The Way joins a local road and keep going on it to pass by the church previously belonging to San Nicolás Hospital (S. XIII), now used as a pilgrim’s hostel.

100 m after, you will see river Pisuerga, one of the largest rivers crossing the French Way in Spain. To cross this river, King Alfonso VI ordered to build Fitero bridge, but there is nothing left from that construction, since its deterioration forced to reconstruct it completely on the late 16th Century. Half of the bridge (the one in the part of Palencia) belongs to that age, but the other half is from the 18th Century.

Leaving the bridge, the Way abandons the road and takes a footpath that passes by Virgen de la Piedad chapel soon before entering Itero de la Vega, the first village in the province of Palencia. To leave Itero, you will cross a road and continue your way on a footpath. Then, you will cross the channel of Pisuerga and ascend to Otero Largo. The dovecotes before entering Boadilla del Camino are the first of many you will see while going through Tierra de Campos. After the village, the Way joins the service trail of the channel of Castilla. Before entering Frómista, you will overcome the channel via the passage of the four sluice gates.
