You will leave taking a land road over the old Roman causeway.
Soon you will arrive at Calzadilla de los Barros, where you should visit Salvador church-fortress (15th Century). Inside, there is a great Gothic-Renaissance altarpiece, considered as one of the best in Extremadura. One of the panel paintings represents Santiago as a Pilgrim.
Continuing on the way, you will cross the bridge over the river Atarja and will arrive at Puebla de Sancho Perez, crossing it to get to the road towards Zafra. This is the end of this stretch and it is a town declared as Historic-Artistic Ensemble.

Distance to Almendralejo: 38 km
It has important historical roots from the Christian Reconquest, being conquest twice by Alfonso IX and Fernando III el Santo, who ceded the town to the Order of Santiago. Before this, Zafra was known as an important town in Celtic and Roman times. Zafra is also known as “the town of the festivals” in Extremadura, being a place with great chivalry tradition.
What can you visit?
The Palaces of Duques de Feria, St. Clare Convent, Casa Grande, Santiago Hospital, Plaza Grande and Plaza Chica, the Urban Wall, the Jewish quarter, Plazuela, Candelaria Collegiate Church and Casa del Ajimez.
